2020 Student Research Symposium Call for Abstracts

7th Annual American Chemical Society Upper Peninsula
Student Research Symposium

Saturday, April 4, 2020
9:00 am – 2:30 pm
Westin Hall
NMU campus, Marquette, MI
Registration deadline: March 20, 2020

What: A venue for students to present their research in chemistry, chemical engineering, and related fields.

Why: This symposium will be an excellent opportunity for students, faculty, and the community at large to learn about the interesting chemistry and related research being conducted in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Who: Undergraduate, graduate, high school and community college students from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and Northeast Wisconsin, pursuing research projects through internally and externally-funded grants, guided independent study, or as part of a course. 

The general public is encouraged to attend!

Cost: No Cost to Present! Lunch will be provided. Limited travel support is available.

Awards: Prize money will be awarded for best posters and presentations. All presenters will receive a gift from the UP Local Section

Along with this years’ theme “Marvelous Metals”, chemists around the world celebrating the international year of periodic table. ACS Upper Peninsula Local Section are planning following events for section members and local community. All events are free and open to public!

ACS UP local section annual meeting featuring “Celebrating D. I. Mendeleev and the Periodic Table” presentation by Dr. Rudy Luck (MTU, Chemistry). Refreshments will be served by the courtesy of MTU Chemistry Department. ACS Local section business meeting will follow the talk. Live stream locations will be sent prior to the meeting. For members at remote locations, Zoom video meeting ID are available for both event. Contact Secretary to have ID prior the event.

UPLS Wins the ACS 21st ChemLuminary Awards

The ACS National Meeting in San Diego, it was announced the Upper Peninsula Local Section was the winner of the ChemLuminary Award for “Best Activity or Program Stimulating Member Involvement.” Thank you for all of your support!

The UPLS Fall meeting will be held on Friday, October 25 beginning at 3 pm at Michigan Technological University Campus (Houghton). The guest speaker will be Rudy Luck, with the presentation entitled “Celebrating D. I. Mendeleev and the Periodic Table.”

Remote locations will be connected via video conferences. Please mark your calendar and will announce details as decided!

The ACS will once again be hosting Program-in-a-Box on October 22 at 6:45 pm EST. The event will be streamed with locations at MTU, NMU and LSSU (rooms TBA). The title will be “Marvelous Metals.”

The UP Local sections is seeking nominations and self nominations for 2020 officers with the election to be held in November. Eligible nominees must be ACS members of the Upper Peninsula Local Section. Nominations can be sent using the form below, and must be made by 5:00 pm (EST), October 28.

Nominations are open for the positions below. Duties of each position and eligibility can be found here.

  1. Chair Elect (3-year term: chair-elect in 2020, chair in 2021, past-chair in 2022)

If you are attending ACS Fall Meeting at San Diego, find time to attend poster session (8 pm) and Award announcement and ceremony (9-10 pm). Thank you for all your participation and support.

Hello UPLS Members,

The Fall 2019 ACS National Meeting is quickly approaching. It will be held Aug 25-29, 2019, in San Diego, CA. The ACS Council will Council will convene on Wednesday, August 28, 8:00 am, in the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Sapphire Ballroom A&B. ACS Council Meetings are open, and visitors are welcome. If you are in San Diego, consider attending and observe ACS Governance in action. The Council agenda for this meeting includes:

Committee Membership Elections:

Council Policy Committee (CPC) – 5 Nominees.

            Committee on Committees (ConC) – 5 Nominees.

            Committee on Nominations and Elections (N&E)- 5 Nominees.

Highlights:

Council will be asked to approve the updated Chemical Professional’s Code of Conduct.

ConC will seek Council approval on a recommendation for the continuance of the Committees on International Activities (IAC) and Professional Training (CPT).

N&E will seek Council approval to move Pittsburgh Local Section from District II to District III. (The total membership in District III is below the permissible minimum and this move will bring both Districts II and III into the permissible range.)

Council will be asked to approve a new International Chemical Sciences Chapter, The Georgia International Chemical Sciences Chapter, which will consist of the territory of the Republic of Georgia.

These committees oversee Chemists Celebrate Earth Week (CCEW) and National Chemistry Week (NCW), and local section grants (Sci-Café, Innovative Project Grants, etc..).

Student Travel Support

The Upper Peninsula Section invites students who have oral or poster presentations accepted at ACS National or Regional Meetings and who are in need of travel assistance to apply for Financial Support of Student Presenters (“Prop. B”.) Applicants shall be nominated by her/His research advisor via the form found on the new ACS web site-Travel Scholarships with required information. Please note the nomination need to be submitted by 30 days before the travel, and travel support is up to $200 per student per meeting.
